Welcome back to week 2 (would’ve been week 3 if I hadn’t skipped last week, whoops) of Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Wishful Endings, which is basically spotlighting and flailing over a not-yet-published book.

Now, you’ve probably heard of this one already, so it won’t be some rare, undiscovered beauty. But hey, I’m excited for it, and I’m really hoping it’ll make me love vampire stories again. I think once you’ve read/seen stories like Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, everything else just seems to try too hard and is either ‘just okay’, or flops entirely.

Twilight was definitely my gateway into the world of young adult, so it holds a bittersweet specialness, and The Vampire Diaries tv show on The CW ruined my life. (Damn you Damon Salvatore for being so strikingly handsome and aggravating at the same time!!!) I read A Discovery of Witches a couple of years ago, but that’s about all I’ve delved into in the world of vampires since the two mentioned above. It was ‘just okay’, and so I haven’t reached out to anything else in that category since. But when I saw Renée Ahdieh – author of  The Wrath and the Dawn, which I loved – was going to pen something of that nature… I just knew I had to read it.

This Week’s Pick

The Beautiful
Author: Renée Ahdieh
Series: The Beautiful #1
Expected Publication: October 8th, 2019 by G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers
Genres: fantasy, young adult, historical fiction, paranormal

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

Age-old feud? A truth about her? Who else thinks the MC is going to be a werewolf? 😏

WHAT BOOK ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO READING? Do you think you’ll pick up The Beautiful and see if Ahdieh does a vampire story well?

I’m linking up my post to Can’t Wait Wednesday!
