Everyone else is doing it, and I’m giving in to peer pressure.

Why is it the middle of 2019? I’m actually about to freak out.

But let’s get this back on track and freak out about books, not about how time is slipping past me like a super fast train that’s rounding a corner and only one side’s wheels are down on the tracks. Know what I mean?

It’s July, and heck, we’re even a week into the month already, and so that means we have less than 25 weeks left in 2019. I think I’m freaking out more than I’ve ever freaked because my child is getting older (and way too sassy), and also because I’ve only read 11 books when my yearly goal is 45!

Yeah, so if there’s some books on repeat with my answers…you know why.

Best book so far you’ve read in 2019

This is SO hard, because I’ve been lucky enough to have multiple 5-star reads in these short 6 months! But the one I liked most? It’d probably have to be … AURORA RISING. But that’s only by a small, narrow margin, because I loved House of Salt and Sorrows and Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matinee just about as much! AURORA RISING only wins because it was an epic space adventure, and the characters were just plain amazing!

I’m going to go with SORCERY OF THORNS with this one, because I got it in my OwlCrate box last month. I’m so eager to read this book, even though I haven’t read any previous books from this author… but I was even considering starting this one right after I finish We Hunt the Flame!

Sorcery of Thorns

I am super eager to read NINTH HOUSE by Leigh Bardugo. Have I ever been disappointed from a book by her? Heck no.

Ninth House

Well… my lowest rated book for the year so far was FAR FAR AWAY by Tom McNeal. It had promise, but it just took way too long to get to the good part.

HOUSE OF SALT AND SORROWS was a major surprise. To be honest, the cover called to me, and I requested it on NetGalley because it boasted to be a retelling (advertised retellings almost always drag me in) of The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Even though I wasn’t 100% familiar with that story, the premise sounded cool. And what do you know?! It was an amazing story that I am constantly yammering on about to anyone who will listen! That narrator is unreliable, which is a BIG turn on for me as a reader because the mystery is just sooo good. So if you haven’t read this one yet, please do yourself a courtesy and read this one when it comes out next month!

Jeff Zentner, author of Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matinee, is definitely an author I’m going to look out for in the future. I loved his writing style, and the way he wrote relationships and banter and wittiness and characters, and need I go on?

Welcome back, AURORA RISING. Nice to see you again. This is kind of a tie between 312’s squad leader, Tyler Jones, and Kal Gilwraeth. Tyler, typical hot guy with tousled blonde hair and dimples to die for, is loyal and moral, almost to a fault. Kal, broody, aloof and something out of an elfin fantasy novel, is… well, there was just something about him that made me like him in this book.

Finian de Karran de Seel. What a name, am I right? He’s an alien, a Berstraskan – bone-white skin, and big, black eyes, who suffered some type of plague when he was younger, so he must use an exosuit to help him walk. He’s attracted to both genders, and he’s also a professional sarcastic arse, but I love him! Although all of the characters in AURORA RISING were done well, Fin’s character was the one that stuck out to me the most.

I wanted to pick Aurora Rising again (Auri being yanked from her pod and finding herself 200+ years in the future just made me so sad because she lost everyone and everything near and dear to her), but I decided to pick another book. A THOUSAND PERFECT NOTES was the second contender, because Beck has a near-miserable life, and my heart constantly hurt for him.

The themes and oppression on Lei’s caste frustrated me – as it should anyone – but the feminism and the f/f romance was a welcome change to read about in GIRLS OF PAPER AND FIRE. Although the sexual abuse was disheartening (because it happens and it sucks and my heart goes out to anyone who is or was a victim), it’s something that needs talked about and it needs attention. I love the author for that.

I actually haven’t read these books, but of the movies I watched this year, I think DUMPLIN’ and TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE were the best!

Favorite post you’ve done this year

I honestly had a blast taking a stroll down memory lane with last week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt: child hood favorites. I loved looking back to see what stories meant the most to me as a small human. See the post!

Can I just say AURORA RISING again? I just love the purple/orange combination. Also, the illustrator is Charlie Bowater, so of course I love it! (She also illustrated Sorcery of Thorns!)

What book(s) do you need to read by the end of the year?

Well, I guess, needless to say, Aurora Rising was the biggest hit for me thus far! I’m currently re-reading it via the audiobook (and oh em gee, I love the voice of Cat!) and it’s safe to say I cannot get enough of these ragtag characters and the space adventure they embark on together.

Have you done this tag? What are your answers? What book seemed to stand out as ‘most loved book by you’ so far this year? And, um, have you read Aurora Rising yet???
