BOOKISH / my first ever unboxing post — november's owlcrate!
Hi, friends! This is my FIRST EVER unboxing post! I convinced myself to take the plunge and buy one after I saw a fellow book blogger post about the different kinds of subscription boxes out there. I investigated most of them, and decided OwlCrate was probably going to be one of the best options for me. Spoiler alert: I’m NOT disappointed!

I thought to myself that OwlCrate would be an excellent subscription choice; I see bloggers like me buying it everywhere on the interweb.

And, so, I think we’re just going to dive right into it, okay? NOTE: This post is heavy on the imagery!

November OwlCrate: Rise From The Ashes

The box at first glance.

I got home Saturday afternoon from lunch with friends and saw the package on my porch. I squealed a little bit as I sat in the car with Rowan, eager for him to wake up from his nap so we could head inside. (No, I wasn’t about to disturb his slumber! Not even for this!)

First, we greeted his dad and then changed his diaper (the suspension is really building), and finally, when I handed him his bottle (which he can hold by himself now), I headed into the kitchen to open my box!

Finally opened!

I opened it and the first thing I saw was the postcard on top of all of the goods. I loved the paper confetti that surrounded everything, and just couldn’t wait to delve inside.

But wait… Rowan was done with his bottle already. He’s a fast eater! So I go back to him, burp him, get him settled into his exersaucer, and then return. Now I’m reeeealllllly ready to see what’s inside this box!

Silver skull planter

I open a small box designed in cute little skulls and flora, and see a silver painted skull planter inside. How cute, and totally my style! Now I just need to find a cute little plant to put in it (and let me be honest, it’ll probably end up being a FAKE plant!)

A pillow case with An Ember in the Ashes quote

Next, inside of a plastic bag, a pretty pillow case cover with a quote from An Ember in the Ashes — I still need to read that one! I put it on one of my throw pillows on the couch anyway, just to see how it looked. Aaaand I love it. So there it shall stay.

I sifted through the box more. There was a pin, dark blue with a pinkish phoenix on it. And… an exclusive wax seal kit – SO COOL! I love letters that are sealed with wax, and now I get to attempt it myself! Let’s just hope I don’t burn myself, heh. 🔥

Wax sealing kit

There were some various stickers and postcards. One of the stickers was of Albus Dumbledore and the phoenix, which fit perfectly with the theme, Rise from the Ashes. There was another postcard with a quote on it from a book that is coming out at the end of December. It has lots of pretty, red swirls and seems to be molded into the shape of an hourglass, with a kind of Arabian style. I like the quote, too: “I know better than to be afraid of stories.”

Wishing bracelet craft

Another really cool thing that it came with was a wishing bracelet craft! I legit had no idea what it was at first, but then I read the back. “Wear your wishes on your wrist … Decorate the paper beads on one side with crayons, markers, pencils, and then write a wish on the other. Roll them up, string them together and wish for good things!” I can’t wait to make mine.

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

And then finally, there was this month’s book! Girls of Paper and Fire. I’ve seen it making its way around the internet, but I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to read it or not (without fully reading the blurb on Goodreads), and this was mostly because of my looming TBR pile filled with 700+ books. But, now the decision was kind of thrust upon me, and I can’t say I’m even mad about it! The book cover is truly beautiful in person — a purple/blue/pink background with glod, metallic lettering — and it’s SIGNED! I love that about these subscription boxes. This book also contains f/f romance, and also some scenes of violence and sexual assault. (If you’ve read it already, tell me your opinion!)

Overall Impression

I truly loved this experience of unboxing a subscription box, and how there’s always a theme! I’m really going to enjoy the wishing bracelet craft and the wax seal kit. The skull planter and the pillow cover are cute little decor pieces, and I’m trying to find something to stick these cute little stickers on. (My laptop, perhaps?) The book Girls of Paper and Fire, a fantasy YA, also looks like it was a very good choice, and after reading the Goodreads blurb, I think I’m going to make it a priority to read it before 2019 is here!

Will I continue to subscribe?

YES! The price is great, and the goodies are wonderful. I most definitely will continue to get OwlCrate!

Have you ever subscribed to a bookish (or other) box? Have you read Girls of Paper and Fire yet? And most importantly: where should I stick my stickers?!?!

  1. Oh yay! I’m glad I skipped forward and read your unboxing! ? The planter and bracelets were misses for me but I think my friend and her daughter will enjoy them. I have so many vinyl stickers from these boxes and I LOVE the art but SAME – I don’t know what to do with them! ? I’m leaning towards laptop as well, or maybe a journal.

I hope you enjoy Girls of Paper and Fire! I really enjoyed the exclusive metallic cover on it, and I completely agree – it’s so cool that they’re signed! ???

    • I like all things Halloween-y, so the planter is cute and my style (I just have to go find a fake plant now, lol), and the wishing bracelet is SUCH a cool idea. But bracelets are kind of hard to wear in my line of work (I work with babies in a preschool, soo…) We will see if it gets any wearing time. I can’t wait to collect a variety of stickers and bookish goodies!

  2. Ahhh so glad you enjoyed this box! I loved this one too ? Girls of Paper And Fire was absolutely INCREDIBLE and really gut-wrenching but also empowering and the exclusive cover is so pretty right?! afjdkslafd ?

    • I’m a quarter of the way through the book so far, and loving it! I just got my December OwlCrate yesterday but haven’t been had the chance to look through it yet because … I’m a parent. ? LOLLL. But I love this subscription!!! They do such a great job ?
